Opera in the Domain is an open-air musical extravaganza held each year in the Domain Gardens, Sydney.
Hosted in January each year, in the height of the summer season, Opera in the Domain attracts tens of thousands of people during its season.
Opera Australia presents this yearly event and has previously presented popular works including Carmen, La Boheme, Candide and Turandot. Previously referred to as Opera in the Park, Opera in the Domain was rebranded in 2005. Sydneysiders attend in their thousands with picnics and chairs and settle in for beautiful music and performances under the stars.
This free event is open to all and visitors are welcome to bring picnics and low sitting chairs. Please note that high backed chairs and umbrellas are not permitted. There are also bars selling drinks and food stalls selling food throughout the night. Gates open from 4pm, with the show starting later in the evening. The performance runs for approximately 2 hours, with intermission.
Visiting the Domain is easy by train. Martin Place on the South Coast Line is the closest station and St James and Circular Quay (Airport, Inner West and South Line) are also an easy walk.
