Paddington

Paddington is one of the suburbs located in eastern Sydney, just three kilometres from the CBD. This inner city suburb is straddled across two local government areas, namely the City of Sydney and the Municipality of Woollahra; fondly referred to as ‘Paddo’.

Neighbouring suburbs include Darlinghurst, Rushcutters Bay, as well as Moore Park. Historically, the suburb was associated with people from the Cadigal community, who also belonged to the Dharug language group.

Oxford Street, on which part of the suburb lies, was used as a walking track by Aborigines, a few years before the arrival of the First Fleet.

One of the most exciting aspects of life in Paddington is that its commercial zones can be divided into several precincts. These include Paddington Markets, Oxford Street, Five Ways, as well as William Street. Paddington Markets is perhaps one of the suburbs most famous landmarks.

Held every Saturday on location at the Paddington Uniting Church, the market was established to give the community a chance to shop for locally produced goods. Whenever you purchase anything at the market, you can contribute to the work of the Eddie Dixon Centre. Here, you can be sure to find everything from jewellery to arts, crafts and even fashion items.

Oxford Street, on the other hand, is a popular destination for shoppers. The kilometre-long strip features many specialty stores and clothing boutiques, a cinema, bookstores as well as hair salons and nail spas. Massage services are also available, the perfect way to unwind after a long day of shopping.

For art lovers, two prominent galleries worth checking out are the Olsen Irwin Gallery and The Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation. Nature lovers will enjoy spending time at the Paddington Reservoir Gardens that have completely transformed this part of the suburb into a thriving green space for the public.

Other landmarks worth exploring include Victoria Barracks, Paddington Town Hall, the Paddington Reserve, as well as the Allianz Stadium.
