Rushcutters Bay

Rushcutters Bay is a beautiful suburb located by the harbour, just three kilometres from the CBD. It is also within the local government area of the City of Sydney.

The suburb’s proximity to the bay gives it its name, with some of the neighbouring suburbs including Darlinghurst, Paddington, Elizabeth Bay, as well as Darling Point.

This harbour-side suburb was initially referred to as the Rush Cutting Bay for the simple reason that the swampy region thrived with tall rushes. Now, this may not sound familiar today, but in the late 19th century, the rushes were used for traditional roofing on houses.

In the years that followed, the land was reclaimed and lead to the creation of the beautiful Rushcutters Bay Park. This park is one of the most beautiful places to retreat to while in this suburb – the perfect spot to laze about.

Beautiful views of the city complement this vantage point, with grassy sections for enjoying a picnic, exercise stations for fitness buffs, as well as a kiosk. Play equipment for the little ones is also available. It has a unique and befitting nautical theme which adds to the maritime vibe onsite. Dogs are allowed off-leash between 10.30am and 3.30pm daily.

It is impossible to miss Kings Cross, one of the unmistakable localities within the suburb. The cross marks the intersection that straddles across neighbouring suburbs. For this reason, it feels like strolling through a modern village. Enjoy your meals with a view at Bird & Bear Boathouse or get your caffeine fix at Coffee, Tea & Me. For those who love fresh produce, Kings Cross Farmers Market is the go-to place for groceries and local souvenirs.

The Hyde Park Barracks Museum is ideal for history lovers as it is home to tales from the past and a varied collection that explores life in prison. Rushcutters Bay has also played host to many sporting events, most notably the sailing competitions during the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.
