Central Station

Central Station is an iconic railway station located south of the Sydney CBD. It is sometimes referred to as the Central Railway station or simply Central, and it is the state’s largest and busiest train station.

Part of this is that it services most of the lines on the train network and moves more than 10 million passengers each year.

The station is on a city block close to Surry Hills, Haymarket and the CBD. The station is bounded by Pitt Street, Eddy Avenue and Elizabeth Street. With its rich history and great cultural significance, it is one of the most important landmarks in Sydney.

The present station was opened to the general public in 1906. Interestingly, the new station incorporated the Mortuary Train Station, which, just as the name suggests, was used to facilitate funeral processions at the nearby Rockwood Cemetery. The station has since undergone redevelopment to maintain its integrity and continues serving millions of passengers annually.

Central Station consists of both ground-level and underground platforms. The latter was constructed as part of the Eastern Suburbs Railway, and in recent years, underground platforms have also been built to expand the train station.

For first-time visitors, it helps to know that the station serves all of the city’s suburban lines except for the Carlingford and Cumberland lines. There are also long-distance train services to different parts of the state.

One of the things that sets this train station apart is its proximity to bus and coach services. Some bus services depart from nearby Railway Square, and long-distance coach services are available on Pitt Street.

Look out for the indicator board at the main concourse. If you are interested in exploring the city, you will be fascinated to learn that the original indicator board is preserved at the Powerhouse Museum. This board had 22 vertical panels, which have since been replaced by computer screens to ease getting by at Central Station.
