Ultimo is an inner-city suburb located two kilometres from the CBD within the local government area of Sydney and near Glebe and Chippendale.

The estate of one John Harris inspired the suburb’s name.

Harris was the recipient of a land grant given to him by the then-governor in 1803. The name resulted from an error from an offence which was indicated as ‘ultimo’, meaning it occurred earlier when it should have been dealt with immediately. It is this reference that explains the suburb’s unique name. Harris Street, located in the suburbs, was also named after John Harris.

One of Ultimo’s most prominent landmarks is the Mustard Seed Uniting Church at Bulwara Road and Quarry Street. Built in 1883, the church has undergone renovations but maintains its grandiose stature in the suburb’s skyline.

Top attractions include the Powerhouse Museum, which features a diverse collection of different types of technology from various fields. Home to almost half a million artefacts, the museum’s name comes from its location at what was once a tram power station.

Drop by Wentworth Park, a large multi-purpose sporting facility that provides space for sports lovers to engage in their favourite games—these range from rugby to soccer and greyhound racing. Additionally, Ultimo boasts of great architectural designs that dot its skyline.

One of the unmistakable design works is the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, which forms part of the University of Technology Sydney. The building’s external facade of crumpled brown paper amazes many visitors and is one of Ultimo’s most popular attractions. The building’s entrance is accessible using the Goods Line, a pedestrian pathway.
