Sutherland is a suburb in South Sydney, just 30 kilometres from the CBD. It serves as the administrative centre for the local government area of the Sutherland Shire.

The suburb’s name was inspired by one of the seamen who were part of Captain Cook’s team, Forby Sutherland and Sutherland Point is thought to have been named after him.

Over the years, the suburb has grown into a residential area with a handful of commercial developments. Some of the places where you can shop include the Sutherland Pawn Shop, Sutherland Best Fresh Gourmet Meats, as well as St. Vinnies; a quaint thrift shop located on Old Princes Highway. Check out fresh blooms at Scotts Florist or spruce up your wardrobe with pieces from Millies Opportunity Shop.

One of the main landmarks in Sutherland is the Woronora Memorial Park. The park is home to old headstones and has since changed to include a function centre and centenary court.

Look out for Prince Edward Park for a day well spent in the outdoors. This park is close to the Woronora River whose tranquillity belies its popularity. Some of the activities to enjoy here include fishing, bushwalking, canoeing, as well as boating.

Other parks that would interest nature lovers include the Clio Street Reserve, Waratah Park, as well as the Sutherland Community Gardens. For sports and recreation, the Sutherland Leisure Centre does not disappoint. It features a 25-metre indoor pool, a steam room, spa and a fully equipped gym.

Sutherland has a reliable transport network that makes it easy to get around. Sutherland Station is located on the Illawarra Line and connects to Wollongong and Bondi with bus services to and from Sutherland Station. Motorists get to use the Old Princes Highway and the Southern Freeway.

Sutherland is about half an hour’s drive from the CBD and makes for a perfect trip out of town. Click the link below to explore the range of accommodation options located in Sutherland.
