Ryde

Ryde is a Sydney suburb located just 13 kilometres from the CBD. It serves as the local government area of the City of Ryde and is part of the scenic Northern Suburbs region.

It is important to note that East Ryde, West Ryde and North Ryde are all separate suburbs from Ryde.

The suburb acquired its name from Ryde Town, located on the Isle of Wight. It is believed to have been named by one of the settlers from the Isle of Wight. Its original Aboriginal name before the adoption of the name Ryde was Wallumatta.

Ryde is home to some historic buildings, many of which were built in the 19th century and have since been preserved. One of the most popular ones is Addington House, called the ‘New Farm’. This sandstone cottage is thought to have been built around 1800. Other heritage buildings include Willandra, a two-storey home built around 1845, and the police station located on Willandra Street.

Away from history and heritage, Ryde is also a natural gem waiting to be explored. It is home to Pidding Park – a tranquil park where families often visit, enjoy a picnic and play around. For the adventurous, the Shrimptons Creek Bushwalk and Cycleway do not disappoint. This serene bushland winds up through the suburb, providing spectacular views.

Alternatively, go to the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre (RALC). The fascinating thing about spending time at this centre is that there is an array of water and ground activities to enjoy. The wading pool is designed for the little ones to get confidence in the water while the older ones enjoy the sheer exhilaration of the Rapid River and giant water slide. Other facilities include a badminton court and a sports program that allows for hockey, netball and soccer.

Treat yourself to Ryde’s vibrant food scene with meals from the Lab Kitchen, casual dining at Atlantis Bar & Dining, and Mexican treats from Guzman Y Gomez Mexican Taqueria. Take the kids along for some fun adventure in Ryde.
