Real Festival is an annual event showcasing Australia’s most renowned theatre performers and creative artists at the Nepean River in Penrith. The unique outdoor setting provides a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience for kids and adults alike.
During the event, the riverbank is transformed into a stage which comes alive with impressive performances, spectacular art, and water activities. Several stalls offering crafty activities and workshops encourage you to get creative and learn something new. Many of Sydney’s most famous food trucks will also be present, serving up delicious snacks and treats throughout the event. Artisan markets sell many interesting finds, and the riverside bar provides the perfect setting for relaxing with friends.
The two-day festival takes place in November, and it’s completely free. It’s recommended to plan your trip to Penrith in advance, especially considering that many things go on during the event, resulting in several road closures. Take note that Trench Avenue will be closed off to traffic heading north during certain times of the event, but it will stay open for southbound traffic. If you are taking a car, secure car parks good for up to 800 cars are available by the Nepean River. Those who are carpooling with other attendees may use the designated drop off and pick up area found at the northern section of Tench Avenue.
Public transportation from Sydney to Penrith is available via shuttle buses, which will operate continuously throughout the festival weekend. The pick up and drop off stations are found at the Penrith Train Station, Penrith Paceway on Station Street, Jamison Park at Batt Street, and at Tench Reserve. Free shuttle buses will also be making the rounds in a loop during the festival. The Great River Walk path surrounding the Nepean River will be open throughout the event as well.
Residents will be given full access to their homes during the festival. While the event is free for all to attend, some of the workshops will require a small fee. Cash will also be needed to pay for food and drinks at the event. There will be several ATM’s on site. Sydney residents who wish to spend time in Penrith after the event may book with hotel partners, who will be offering special packages around the time of Real Festival.
While tables and seats will be provided, you’re welcome to bring your own picnic blanket, chairs, rugs, or cushions. These will come in handy especially for enjoying the live entertainment from day to night.
