New Years Day falls on the 1st of January each year, in the height of the Australian summer. It has been designated as a public holiday which allows many people to have a relaxing day off work.
Even though there may be some restricted trading hours for some businesses in Sydney, there are still heaps of things that you can do on New Years Day.

You can also catch a movie on New Years Day, as there are some cinemas that remain open in the CBD. Many of the Boxing Day blockbusters are often released on Boxing Day, so wait a couple of days for the large crowds to die down and enjoy a new film.
Other fun ways to enjoy New Years Day in Sydney include visiting Sydney’s famous attractions which remain open. These include the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, Taronga Zoo, SEA Life Aquarium and Wild Life Sydney Zoo.
You will find supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths remain open as do petrol stations and many cafes and restaurants in and around the city. Public transport will operate on a Sunday timetable.
