New Years Day

New Year’s Day falls on the 1st of January each year, at the height of the Australian summer. It has been designated as a public holiday, allowing many people a relaxing day off work.

Even though there may be some restricted trading hours for some businesses in Sydney, there are still heaps of things that you can do on New Year’s Day.

For many Sydneysiders, the best way to spend New Year’s Day is to head down to the beach. After a massive night of partying, thousands flock to Bondi Beach, Manly or the Northern Beaches. Many others head into the city with a picnic and enjoy the Domain Gardens, as there are plenty of shady places to avoid the heat.

You can also catch a movie on New Year’s Day, as some cinemas remain open in the CBD. Many Boxing Day blockbusters are often released on Boxing Day, so wait a couple of days for the large crowds to die and enjoy a new film.

Other fun ways to enjoy New Year’s Day in Sydney include visiting Sydney’s famous attractions, which remain open. These include the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, Taronga Zoo, SEA Life Aquarium and Wild Life Sydney Zoo.

You will find supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths remain open, as do petrol stations and many cafes and restaurants in and around the city. Public transport will operate on a Sunday timetable.
