Roslyn Packer Theatre

Roslyn Packer Theatre is a state-of-the-art theatre that is home to some of the city’s most iconic performances (previously known as the Sydney Theatre). Over the years, the theatre has hosted different productions, ranging from comedy to live music, drama, and dance, making it a favourite destination for theatre lovers.

The theatre’s strategic location is in the heart of the suburb’s growing art precincts, with its history dating back to 1994 when the idea to develop Walsh Bay was fronted.

The theatre is housed in an industrial heritage building whose remarkable design has converted it into one of the most entertaining art centres across the country. With a seating capacity of 896, the theatre plays host to some of the biggest productions in the city, with some of its sold-out productions in the past including ‘The War of the Roses’, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, and the legendary ‘The Lost Echo’.

The theatre has also hosted international productions from Germany and Britain. So, it comes as no surprise that the Roslyn Packer Theatre is home to iconic festivals held in the city. Most notable among these are the Sydney Festival, the Dungog Film Festival, and the Sydney Writers’ Festival.

It’s important to mention that the theatre was named in honour of Roslyn Packer, an individual who dedicated her life to forwarding the country’s arts and culture. In addition to Roslyn’s name, the theatre also commemorates Ruth Cracknell and Richard Wherrett, after whom the function room and rehearsal room are named, respectively.

The Roslyn Packer Theatre is located at 2 Hickson Road in Walsh Bay. It is easily accessible using bus routes 311, 324 and 325. Patrons can also take a ferry or train to Circular Quay or Wynyard, where the theatre is just a 15-minute walk.
