Kamay Botany Bay National Park

Kamay Botany Bay National Park is a day-tripper’s dream come true in eastern Sydney. This protected park combines the best of the country’s rich cultural heritage and stunning natural scenery for an unforgettable experience.

Home to some of Australia’s key historical sites, it is easy to see why this is a preferred destination for day trips out of town.

Located about 16 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, the park is divided into two sections: the northern and the southern locations. For this reason, the park is located at both Kurnell and La Perouse.

Start your trip with a visit to the Kurnell Visitor Centre. Here, you can learn about the significance of the historical sites within the park and the blending of local Aboriginal and European cultures. From here, take the Burrawang walk for an immersive natural walk that brings you up close with the park’s diverse flora and fauna.

This walk will take you to Captain Cook’s Landing Place – another popular Kamay Botany Bay National Park attraction. Look for the interpretive signs along the way to understand the context of the different historical events and places.

A trip to the park is incomplete without enjoying a drive to the nearby Cape Solander – the perfect spot for whale watching. On a good day, you can catch views of humpback whales putting on a show. Cape Solander also has beautiful coastal views, so remember to carry a camera.

The La Perouse Museum is another great attraction worth visiting while at the park. This museum is popular with history buffs interested in stories and expeditions from the past—most notably, the adventures of Comte de La Perouse, the French native after whom the museum is named.

Other fun things to do at the park include the nature trails, picnicking on the beach, and exploring the concrete fort on Bare Island. Kamay Botany Bay National Park is accessible using Cape Solander Drive.
