Cataract Dam

Cataract Dam is the first and oldest of Sydney’s dams and one of the most scenic locations in Macarthur. It is a water catchment area of the Upper Nepean Scheme and supplies water to Macarthur, Wollondilly Shire, and metropolitan Sydney.

Construction of the dam began in 1902 and ended five years later. Its preservation for more than a century later has earned it a place on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

For visitors willing to walk down memory lane and experience the magical beauty of this dam, the Cataract Dam and Picnic Area are the places to be.

This picnic area is close to Appin and lies 85 kilometres south of Sydney. For this reason, it is a perfect location for a day trip out of town with the whole family. A fantastic spot for picnics and family gatherings, Cataract Dam promises an unforgettable experience.

Use the electric BBQs to prepare delicious meals and enjoy them al-fresco style. There are also picnic tables, drinking water, and toilets. There is also a large children’s playground on site.

Enjoy bird watching and look out for popular bird species, such as the Spotted Quail-thrush, the Painted Honeyeater, and the Red-crowned Toadlet. A short distance away, visit the Manor House and enjoy walking back to when this house was part of a busy construction site more than 100 years ago.

A trip to this dam is incomplete without walking across it for amazing views of the lake and Keele Island, which is further away. Look out for the sandstone valve house right at the wall’s centre for an excellent location shot. Wind up your visit with a tour of the Appin Massacre Memorial Rock, which honours the memory of the people who perished in 1816 and had a lasting impact on the land dwellers.

Cataract Dam is open between 10am and 5pm on weekdays and closes at 7pm on weekends and public holidays. Entry is free, and pets are not allowed.
