Carriageworks

Carriageworks is a modern multi-arts facility located in Sydney. The centre’s operations are overseen and managed by artists with great contemporary ideas, with a focus on Sydney’s art scene.

As a site of cultural significance, the facility receives support from the Australian Council for the Arts, which has helped cement its position as a contemporary centre in the region. The centre has a reputation for creating diverse and inclusive programs for the art community.

The location of the Carriageworks is significant because it is located on the site where the Eveleigh Rail Yards were built in 1880. These yards are home to a good chunk of the country’s major rail network, with carriages used during the construction of the rail network once constructed within the building. This might have inspired the site’s name as it is known today.

Carriageworks was officially opened in 2007 and has become one of Sydney’s most diverse art facilities. Many resident companies are on location, all relevant to the contemporary arts sector. These include Erth, Majeure, Sydney Chamber Opera, and Felix Media.

The arts centre has held numerous exhibitions on location, allowing thousands of visitors to interact with the diverse art onsite. Some of the key works in the past have included Ryoji Ikeda’s Test Pattern of 2013, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and Chance by Christian Boltanski.

Carriageworks is also home to a renowned market with great in-season fresh produce, attracting organic farmers and artisan producers from across the state.

Carriageworks is easily accessible using public transport. Take a train to Redfern Station, grab a bus, and get off at Codrington Street; close to Sydney University.

Whether you are looking for a place to shop for organic, biodynamic foods or are planning to discover Sydney’s art scene, Carriageworks will not disappoint.
