Homebush Bay

Homebush Bay, located on the south banks of the picturesque Parramatta River in Sydney, is home to the Sydney Olympic Park, Lidcombe, and Wentworth Point.

Located only 16 kilometres away from the central business district of Sydney, this quiet area has become a favourite of residents who want to get away from busy city life.

Perhaps its most famous landmark are the numerous shipwrecks; hidden in plain sight on the bay. Its origins date back to the sixties when the bay served as a ship-breaking yard. But when the yard shut down, several ships remained – many of which are found throughout the bay.

The one most visible is the SS Ayrfield, but it’s a mesmerising sight even as it rusts because it’s gradually being enveloped by lush greenery, giving the impression of a floating garden. The shipwreck can be seen on both sides of Haslams Creek.

For some relaxation, head over to Bicentennial Park; located on the southern end of Homebush Bay. The rejuvenated mangrove wetland, shaded areas, and scenic views make this an excellent spot for recharging. The Sydney Olympic Park is perhaps the most famous attraction here, encompassing 640 hectares. New stylish buildings have been built within the park, including apartments, residential condominiums, and offices.

Although the area is primarily residential and commercial, it’s worth checking out if you’d like a break from Sydney.
