Chatswood is a key district located in the Lower North Shore of Sydney, ten kilometres from the CBD. It serves as the administrative centre of the City of Willoughby local government area; a vibrant commercial scene and is known for its growing population density.
The district’s name was inspired by Charlotte Harnett, who was wife to the then Mayor of Willoughby.

Charlotte was fondly referred to as Chattie, and the area became known as Chattie’s Wood which was eventually shortened to Chatswood. In the years that followed, the district’s population grew with the construction of the North Shore Railway Line towards the end of the 19th century.
It is impossible to visit Chatswood and miss out on its expansive shopping centres. The two most popular ones are Westfield Chatswood which makes up part of the Westfield chain of stores as well as the Chatswood Chase Sydney shopping mall. The two, in addition to smaller centres such as Lemon Grove and Chatswood Interchange, are a shopper’s dreams come true.
What’s more, there are a number of outdoor markets in the bustling district. Explore the Melody Markets held each Thursdays and Friday from where you can get fresh produce, art works and crafts, all with the background of soothing live music.
Shopping in Chatswood is incomplete without indulging in local and international cuisine, especially considering that this is a key dining precinct in the region. Enjoy classic Italian cuisine at Terrazza Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, or go the Thai way with mouth-watering dishes at Khao Pla.
Treat yourself to great seafood from Fook Yuen Restaurant and wind up with street food at the Malaysia-inspired eatery known as Mamak. Some of the hotels that you can visit while at Chatswood include the Sebel, The Mantra, The Chatswood Club as well as the swanky Meriton Serviced Apartments.
Chatswood has a solid transport system that incorporates trains and buses. Get train services to and from Chatswood Railway Station or opt for the buses that link to different parts of the region. The district has a key bus terminal to ease connections to other suburbs.
