Orange is a well-known wine-growing area with a thriving wine industry. Its cool climate and dry autumn conditions are ideal for grape growing and enable producers in the region to develop a range of high-quality, award-winning wines.
Local producers and restaurant owners gather each year to organise a wide variety of events over the 10 days of the Orange Wine Festival. Popular events include wine tasting, masterclasses in producing wine, and night markets that feature the best local wines, produce and cuisine that Orange has to offer. Bookings are essential for the wine-tasting and masterclasses.
If you want to attend the event in style, the Vino Express is a great option. This is a luxury 3-day weekend package of premium Orange wine and food experiences. The package includes return train fares from Sydney to Orange (a 5-hour journey) in a dedicated Festival carriage, as well as two nights’ accommodation when you arrive in Orange. Bus trips are also available that will take you on a day tour of Orange’s best vineyards and boutique wineries. This event is known as ‘Wine in the Vines’ and you need to book early to avoid missing out on available tours.
The region is known for both its white and red wines, including Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs, Riesling Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignons and Pinot Noirs.
If you don’t want to take advantage of the Vino Express train package offer, Orange is about a 3 hour and 45-minute drive west from the Sydney CBD on the Great Western Highway. Train and bus services are also available to get you there. You can catch a train to Lithgow station on the Blue Mountains line and then take a bus to Orange. Orange also has its own regional airport.
