Overseas Passenger Terminal

The Overseas Passenger Terminal, abbreviated OPT, is a landmark building at Circular Quay. Officially referred to as the Sydney Cove Passenger Terminal, it caters to public cruise ships and ocean liners on arrival and is an integral part of the tourism industry in Sydney.

It is fascinating to note that while the region’s shipping operations date back to the late 18th century, the current structure was established in 1958, with some development projects carried out in subsequent years.

The building’s design stands out, as its black frame resembles its original style. Moreover, the two gangways and a distinct mural have earned the building a place on the heritage-listed buildings list in New South Wales. It is also interesting to learn that this terminal is part of the buffer zone around the iconic Sydney Opera House.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal is the only passenger terminal close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. For this reason, the terminal has hosted several global cruise liners, which, due to their structure, cannot pass under the bridge. The largest cruise liner to ever stop at the terminal is the Queen Mary II.

Nothing beats the stunning views from the different viewing platforms for visitors exploring Sydney and not necessarily arriving at the terminal on a cruise liner. The best time to enjoy these views is when there are no ships at the terminal.

Alternatively, enjoy food and wine at the numerous dining establishments that line the promenade—an excellent opportunity to enjoy a fine dining experience with a view. You may also choose to take a short walk to The Rocks, a delightful precinct with a rich history and a special place in Sydney’s list of must-visit attractions.

Some amenities at the Overseas Passenger Terminal include a wheelchair-assisted entry (but make prior arrangements), accessible escalators, and ATMs. Remember to confirm your check-in time, as these vary from one cruise to another.
