Nurses Walk

The Nurses Walk is a popular laneway located right behind the Museum of Contemporary Art. It is one of the most visible spots close to The Rocks and is packed with art galleries and restaurants.

History has shown that the laneway was a shortcut that provided access to the first hospital constructed in the colonial era. The Nurses Walk was established in 1979 to commemorate the nurses who worked in the area’s hospitals between 1788 and 1816.

As expected, several information panels, works of art, and plaques explain the site’s history. Lucy Osburn’s plaque celebrates her contribution to introducing Florence Nightingale’s nursing principles in the state, providing a glimpse into life during the colonial period.

While this walk is steeped in history, it certainly does not exclude those who would love to discover the sights and sounds of present-day Sydney. There are many cafes and quaint shops to explore, so enjoy a snack from The Vintage Cafe on the Rocks or choose the Scarlett Restaurant for excellent food on the go.

There is so much for art lovers to enjoy while on the Nurses Walk. Look out for The Crystal Gallery and visit The Australian Arts and Gems Gallery for a perfect afternoon. If you love art and photography, one of the best places to visit is the Celebrity Vogue Photography & Seductive Art Gallery. There are also vintage gift shops where you can get the perfect souvenir from your Sydney adventures.

The walk’s proximity to other attractions makes it a favourite place for first-time visitors, as it is possible to combine the best of The Rocks with the walk. These attractions include Cadman’s Cottage, one of the city’s oldest buildings, and the Suez Canal, home to great works of contemporary art.

Nurses Walk is between George and Harrington Streets in The Rocks, and entry is free.
