Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Sydney Conservatorium of Music is among the oldest music schools in the country, and without a doubt, one of the most prestigious.

The school was previously known as the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music or simply ‘The Con’. A faculty of the University of Sydney, the school continues to play an integral role in Australia’s music scene.

The Conservatorium’s oldest building was the brainchild of Francis Greenway. His works featured a majestic Gothic style, a testament of the era’s architectural trends. In the years that followed, the school became home to the country’s first orchestra operating full time. Its members were drawn from the students at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as well as other experienced musicians in the field.

Developments at the school include the addition of new halls, key library facilities, modern soundproof studios, as well as offices. All these changes have made the school a premium institute and an exciting and innovative space for music lovers and students from across the world.

One of the most exciting things about visiting the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is that it has a year-long program that encompasses concerts, lectures and masterclasses by some of the best in the field – so if you are a music lover, then this is an ideal place to visit.

Entry into many of the events is free, and families are welcome to visit with their children. What’s more, there are school holiday workshops for the little ones to enjoy. Adults may also enrol for the short music courses held regularly at The Con.

Visit the music Cafe and enjoy a range of snacks and beverages. Look out for the pies – among the best in the city! Make your way to the bistro located on the second level (right below the Box Office) and to the cafe on the third level (close to the main front door). The cafe is open daily, on weekdays between 8am and 4:30pm, on Saturdays between 8am and 3:30pm, and Sundays before concerts.
