Wentworth Park

Wentworth Park is a popular destination for Sydneysiders and visitors looking for adventure close to the city. The park is a multi-purpose sporting facility located just two kilometres from the Sydney CBD; best known for hosting different sports that include speedway, greyhound racing, rugby league, and soccer.

The park’s history dates back to the 19th century.

The area occupied by the park was mainly a swampy region; then known as the Blackwattle Cove Swamp. In the mid-19th century, some industries were established in the region, but these led to environmental pollution. Eventually, the creek and swamp were filled with the idea of creating a park.

This saw the inclusion of paths, serene lakes, pathways and a host of ovals that transformed the site into a tranquil paradise. In the years that followed, the park became a focal point for ceremonies and community activities, with different sports, also held at the park. For instance, the park was used as a speedway from 1928 to 1936 before the cancellation of the meetings due to the noise and damage to the tracks.

Currently, Wentworth Park is popular for holding greyhound racing. Part of the reason for this is that the park is home to the Greyhound Owners Breeders and Trainers Association. The races are held every Friday and Saturday night from 7:30pm, as well as every other Monday.

Coupled with four floodlit fields, the park is the perfect location for football or soccer. Cricket lovers need to look out for the nets located in the northern part of the park. For fitness buffs, the availability of fitness stations is a welcome idea. If you visit the park during Easter, make plans for the Golden Easter Egg gala dinner. The highlight of this fun-filled event is the top prize of a million dollars.

Amenities provided at the park include a shaded play area for kids, public toilets, and elevator access from Wattle Street. Wentworth Park is easily accessible using bus routes 431, 433 and 501, or by train at the Wentworth Park light rail station.
