Burragorang

The Burragorang lookout and picnic area is one of the most enchanting destinations outside of Sydney.

The lookout point provides stunning views of Lake Burragorang; an Australian human-made reservoir made possible by the construction of the Warragamba Dam. The dam is located within the Greater Blue Mountains Area World Heritage Site and is the primary water supply for the city.

The picnic area is close to the lake is an excellent way to get away from the buzz of everyday life and retreat to the bliss and tranquillity of the great outdoors. It is an ideal day trip from Sydney, Camden, Campbelltown – among other towns nearby.

The picnic area and lookout point are located high above the dam to provide excellent panoramic views of the surrounding region. From here, visitors get a new appreciation of Sydney’s primary water source. It is also a great place to learn that the lake has an estimated 2,031 gigalitres of water; a mind-boggling figure that makes it easy to understand why it is such a cherished resource.

Along with the scenic views, there are some picnic sites where visitors can get a great bird’s eye view of the dam. There is also a kids playground for the little ones to enjoy.

Amenities available at the lookout point include BBQ facilities ideal for a lazy weekend afternoon, clean flushing washrooms, as well as ample parking. The Lookout point is easily accessible for the use of wheelchairs and prams. Note that there are no shops, cafes or kiosks on location, so be sure to carry your supplies.

After spending time at the lookout, head out to the Dam, about half an hour away. This road has some great picturesque views, so you can stop to soak in the natural beauty along the way. On arrival at the Dam, make your way to the Visitors Centre. Learn more about the Dam and Lake Burragorang when you visit the Water For Life Exhibition, as the kids enjoy fun activities in the Burragorang Room.

There is no better way to marvel at this engineering feat than by visiting Burragorang.
