Customs House

The house was constructed between 1844 and 1845 on the land of its indigenous owners, a group of people known as the Eora people. In addition to this, it also marks the site where the First Fleet landed, and this is why its significance in Sydney’s history can’t be ignored. It has since undergone many renovations to its present state.

On arrival at Customs House, one of the most obvious things you will notice is the intricate architectural style of the building. The house’s forecourt, which measures 10 metres by 20 metres, has an outdoor piazza that is popular for hosting events; ranging from experiential functions to public and cultural events.

Customs Square is an iconic part of Australia’s history, and this is what welcomes you to this rich heritage building. A closer look reveals that part of the square depicted the original tidal zone when the First Fleet landed.

Inside the house, visitors are greeted by a City Model that mainly revolves around presenting Sydney at your feet. This model places the city in perspective, and it is exciting to be able to identify the tiny spots and sights in real life. The kids will particularly enjoy this feature and entry is free for all.
