The Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival is Australia’s main science fiction film festival. Also known as Fantastic Planet, the event is committed to showcasing a diverse line-up of the latest offerings in science fiction, fantasy, cult cinema and horror to local audiences.
The event was founded by Deadhouse Films, the same team responsible for bringing you A Night of Horror International Film Festival, Australia’s premier horror film festival. What makes Fantastic Planet stand out from other film festivals is that most of the films in its line-up have been pledged via cold submission, which means that it relies heavily on independent filmmakers to contribute through the open submission process. In doing so, they help ensure that indie filmmakers are supported and have a better chance of being screened during the event.
Aside from the screenings, a major highlight of Fantastic Planet is the question and answer portions, as well as after parties. Each year, fans look forward to these events as they allow them to meet many renowned Australian and international filmmakers. Other highlights include forums and special events, and it culminates with the announcement of the winners at the end of the festival.
The Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival takes place for around a week from November to December, in conjunction with its sister event, A Night of Horror Film Festival. Together, they show over a hundred films each year at the Dendy Cinemas Newtown.
