The Quarantine Station

The Quarantine Station, also known as the Q-Station, is a heritage-listed building located on the northern side of Sydney Harbour and close to Manly.

As the name suggests, the building was used as a quarantine station between 1832 and 1984.

The concept behind this structure was that anyone arriving in Australia (then a British colony) had to be kept in quarantine before been released. The purpose of doing so was to prevent the spread of infectious diseases from migrant populations.

In its decade and a half of operation, more than 500 inhabitants died from different conditions; including smallpox, typhoid, cholera and Spanish influenza. Fast forward to the 21st century and the station functions as a hotel and heritage centre.

As one of Sydney’s most exciting destinations, The Quarantine Station is a must-visit. With affordable accommodation, engaging tours and event packages, there is every reason to immerse yourself in this heritage-listed facility.

Make your booking for a weekend and enjoy a tranquil getaway with comfort within the historic buildings. Visit the Boilerhouse Restaurant & Bar to treat yourself to a sumptuous meal. You could also take a drink or two at the Engine Room Bar, all the while marvelling at the rich history of this remarkable location. The Visitor’s centre Cafe is open for snacks and refreshments.

A tour of The Quarantine Station is incomplete without checking out a ghost tour. This former station is thought to be one of the most haunted sites in the country. Many people have laid claim to seeing ghosts, with some rumoured to have captured images of spirits within the structure. Take part in a two-hour long tour that starts at 8pm.
