Dawn Fraser Baths

Dawn Fraser Baths is a heritage-listed attraction in Sydney whose rich history makes it one of the most exciting spots in the area.

As the country’s oldest pool, it is named after the Australian sporting icon, Dawn Fraser. Dawn Fraser was one of Australia’s most successful swimmers, having won the 100-metre freestyle three times at the Olympics.

Built in the early 1880s, the pool is home to the Balmain Swimming and the Balmain Water Polo clubs, cementing its place as one of the most treasured sites for the community. If you love to swim, then this is the perfect spot for you. When the tide is low, there is a beach where the little ones can build sandcastles and frolic in the sand while the adults enjoy taking a dip.

A casual glance at the baths reveals that they are enclosed within a massive wooden structure, which also doubles up as a stand from where spectators can enjoy the events held on location. There are also two-storey historic buildings that surround the pool.

Amenities available at the Dawn Fraser Baths include a kiosk that sells hot food, snacks and refreshments, toilets, showers, as well as changing rooms. There are plenty of unshaded spots around the pool, and a few shaded spots from where visitors can relax.

Note too that the pool is fully netted to keep sharks at bay. There is no playground on site, but parents with young children can visit the nearby Elkington Park Playground. Parking is available around Elkington Park, and there is a bus stop nearby for those using public transport.

If you are visiting for the first time, you will enjoy strolling through Balmain; winding up with a dip at the Dawn Fraser Baths.
